FAQ

Which drives are supported?

An external drive or USB flash drive formatted as exFAT or APFS. Drives formatted as FAT32, NTFS or HFS+ can only be browsed and restored from, not backed up to. You can reformat a drive as exFAT or APFS on a computer (reformatting erases the drive, so copy its data elsewhere first).

The app can't find my drive after I plug it in.

iOS doesn't notify apps when a drive is plugged in. First make sure the drive appears in the Files app. Then return to this app, open the Drive tab, tap "Choose Drive" and select a folder on the drive. iOS may need a few seconds to recognize a newly connected drive.

What if the drive is unplugged, the app is closed, or the battery dies during a backup?

No problem. Reopen the app: the Home screen shows "Last backup didn't finish". Tap "Resume". Files already backed up won't be copied again, and no partial files are left behind.

I renamed the PhotoBackup folder on my computer.

Please rename it back to "PhotoBackup". The app needs this exact name, and the hidden ".meta" folder inside it, to recognize your existing backups. When the app detects a renamed folder, it tells you and can rename it back with one tap.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The app has no network access and no account. Photos are only copied between your iPhone and the drive you choose. See the Privacy Policy for details.

If I delete photos from my iPhone, are the backups on the drive kept?

Yes. Deleting photos from your iPhone in the app doesn't affect backup files on the drive. Deleted photos first move to Recently Deleted in Photos, where they can be recovered for 30 days.

What is Content Search, and how do I turn it off?

While charging and idle, the app recognizes objects and text in photos on your iPhone so you can search for things like "cat" or "receipt." Everything happens on the device and nothing is uploaded. Turn it off in Settings → Content Search, or delete existing analysis results there.

How do I change the language?

The app follows the system language by default. In Settings, tap Language to open the system settings, where you can choose a language for this app only.

How do I withdraw my consent to the Privacy Policy?

Go to Settings → About → Withdraw Privacy Policy Consent. The app then stops reading your photos and accessing the drive. Existing data on your iPhone is not deleted.
